OUR CHURCH
At the 1955 NC Annual Conference, Rev. Leon Crossno was appointed to begin a new mission church in Havelock. The primary purpose was to be a local church ministry to the Marine Corps enlisted men stationed at Cherry point MCAS. The first worship service for this new mission was held on Sunday, September 4, 1955 at the old Cherry Theatre located across from Havelock Elementary School. The mission was officially constituted on November 6, 1955 and was given the name, Cherry Point Methodist Church. The Rev. H. K. King, New Bern District Superintendent, presided at the Constituting Church Conference. Charter membership included 27 adults entering into Full Membership and 16 children entering into Preparatory Membership. Immediately following the service, church officers were elected to begin leading the work of lay ministry.
In May of 1956, the small, yet growing congregation moved into the Community Chapel (which is now the City Hall). Full membership had increased to 57 people with an average of 87 in Sunday School. In that same year, both the Methodist Youth Fellowship and the Women's Society were organized. The Methodist Men began their ministry in 1957.
As the congregation continued to grow in numbers and in its outreach to the local community, plans were made to build a permanent church home. The official Ground Breaking Ceremony for the new building was held in December, 1959. Six months later, on Sunday, June 26, 1960, the Cherry Point Family celebrated its first worship service in the new building. Ironically, Rev. Crossno was able to preach the first sermon in the new structure but was moved to another church appointment the very next week!
The church sanctuary was provided a much-needed renovation in 1987. The renovated room was dedicated to Christ on Sunday, January 31, 1988.
Recently, in 2007, in an effort to further expand our capability to "Offer Christ," we have
completed the addition of a modern new worship center. Not only does this worship center provide a significantly larger seating capacity, but also includes a state-of-the-art sound system as well as the capacity for video projection. The original sanctuary has now been converted into a sizable Christian Life Center for exciting multi-purpose use. This new construction and renovation is now enabling Cherry Point United Methodist Church to become much more varied, expansive, and contemporary in our methods of advancing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
